The City Council has decided to go ahead with plans for a new City Hall that is nearly 10% larger than what voters approved in March.

Councilman John Paul Ledesma was the only council member to vote against the 52,000-square-foot project last week, citing the increased size of the municipal building planned across a courtyard from the Mission Viejo Library.

The City Hall is expected to cost about $57.7 million over the next 50 years. Work could begin on the building in August.

A city ordinance passed in 1992 required that residents be asked if they approve of the size, location and estimated cost of a new City Hall in an advisory vote, although it was not binding on the City Council.

The Planning Commission recommended approval of the design last week, but not without questioning the amount of parking available for the two buildings.
