Autopsy Planned for Body of Baby Boy Found in Ocean

Share

An autopsy is pending in the death of a baby boy whose body was found inside a plastic bag floating in the ocean off Long Beach, police said Monday.

Two swimmers discovered the bag about 2 p.m. Sunday near the beach at Junipero Avenue. They opened the plastic and found a newborn inside with his umbilical cord still attached.

Authorities said it appeared that the infant was delivered prematurely and then quickly disposed of. They estimated that the mother was 30 to 40 weeks pregnant when the boy was born.

Police said Monday no arrests have been made. Where the baby came from and how long it had been in the water have yet to be determined, they said.

Anyone with information about the infant is asked to call Long Beach homicide detectives at (562) 570-7244.
