Fusing the past with the present, the city’s public library will integrate oak from its old staircase railings into the design for the new railings.

“The original rails were very wide, and it’s difficult to grab on,” said Ray Kawase, president of the Public Library Foundation. “The new code says the rails needed to be smaller for gripping.”

While the older railing was not user-friendly, the newly installed rails looked “like pipes,” said Al Milo, the library’s director.
