An 8-year-old Norwalk girl who was attacked by a pit bull Thursday was in serious condition after undergoing nearly four hours of surgery at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, hospital officials said.
The child, identified by neighbors as Natalie Gomez, was visiting a neighborhood friend in the 15500 block of Bloomfield Avenue when her friend’s dog attacked her inside the house shortly after 10:30 a.m. The dog bit her leg and refused to release it, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Ed Chenal.
“The victim’s father heard the screaming and ran to the house,” Chenal said. “He threw a blanket over the dog, trying to separate it from the girl.”
But the animal did not release the child, Chenal said.
Deputy Doug Williams of the Sheriff’s Norwalk station arrived shortly afterward and used his baton to free the girl, Chenal said.
