May, McPeak Qualify for Main Draw in German Open

Misty May and Holly McPeak made it through the qualifying round Thursday at the FIVB German Open beach volleyball tournament in Berlin.

May and McPeak, who won the last FIVB event in Chicago two weeks ago, defeated Mexico’s Hilda Gaxiola and Teresa Mara Galindo, 15-9, then ousted the U.S. team of Kristin Schritter and Marla O’Hara in a country-quota playoff, 15-9. May and McPeak will face Amanda Jane Glover and Audrey Cooper of England in the first round of today’s main draw.

May and McPeak are third in the U.S. Olympic qualifying standings with 2,062 points. Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan are top-ranked at 2,574 points and Liz Masakayan and Elaine Youngs, formerly of El Toro High, are second at 2,284. Davis and Johnson Jordan and Masakayan and Youngs were awarded byes into the main draw.

* The main draw for the men’s FIVB stop in Lignano, Italy, begins today with former Laguna Beach High player Dain Blanton and partner Eric Fonoimoana third in the men’s Olympic qualifying standings.

Blanton and Fonoimoana will meet Austrians Oliver Stamm and Nikolas Berger in today’s first round. They trail the San Clemente pair of Karch Kiraly and Adam Johnson by 18 points for the final Olympic qualifying berth. Kiraly and Johnson are not playing this weekend.

TENNIS

Lenny Lindborg of South Laguna and Jim Nelson of Irvine won their quarterfinal match in men’s 65s doubles in the USTA National Hardcourt Championships at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

Also advancing to today’s semifinals finals was Doug Doss of Newport Beach, with his partner, Buddy Lomax of San Antonio, Texas.

In the men’s 55s doubles, Daud Ahmen of Laguna Beach advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles, but was eliminated in singles play. Ken Stuart and Larry Collins of Newport Beach also advanced to the quarterfinals in 55s doubles.

* Sondra Michelson of Dana Point defeated San Diego’s Elizabeth Kaufman, 6-2, 6-2, and advanced to today’s quarterfinals in an Acura Classic qualifying tournament at the Rancho San Clemente Tennis and Fitness Club.

Organizers of the Classic, which will have eight players ranked in the top 10 on the WTA Tour, have scheduled three tournaments in which players can earn a wild-card entry into the qualifying draw, which begins July 29 at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad.

Kim Nguyen, a Saddleback High senior, lost to eighth-seeded Dandan Jiang of Westlake Village, 6-3, 6-2.

SOCCER

The Waves, one point out of second place in the A-League’s Pacific Division, meet the Minnesota Thunder tonight in Blaine, Minn.

The Waves are 9-8-1 after a 1-0 victory over Bay Area and trail San Diego (10-6-1) and El Paso (9-7-1) in the division. Minnesota leads the Central Division with a 12-1-4 record and ranks first in the league in scoring at 2.43 goals per game.

The Waves’ Jason Boyce is tied for fourth in the league in scoring with Minnesota’s John Menyongar, each with 21 points.

THE PREPS

The Southern Section has extended the application deadline for its vacant assistant commissioner position from Aug. 4 to Aug. 10, in an attempt to find more candidates.

The new assistant commissioner will replace Bill Clark, whose last day will be Sept. 12.
