Hallowed Dreams Wins 16th in Row

TIMES STAFF WRITER

By doing the expected, Hallowed Dreams ran her way into the record books Saturday.

Hallowed Dreams, a 3-year-old Malagra filly, won the Dixie Miss Stakes at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La., for her 16th consecutive victory--tying the thoroughbred record held by Cigar, Citation and Mister Frisky.

Hallowed Dreams, who has never raced outside Louisiana, had only three opponents in the Dixie Miss and was never seriously menaced in her history-making performance. The 1-9 favorite won by three lengths in gate-to-wire fashion, completing six furlongs in 1:09 4/5 under jockey Sylvester Carmouche.

Owned by trainer Lloyd Romero in partnership with Johnny Gaspard, Hallowed Dreams not only has won in all of her starts, but has also been the leader throughout each of them--with one exception for the first half-mile of a six-furlong race on Dec. 11.

“She’s not for sale,” Romero said. “She will remain in Louisiana because she belongs to the people of Louisiana.”

Euchre, a Canadian-bred gelding owned by Frank Stronach and ridden by Alex Solis, completed the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41 3/5 in beating 17-1 shot Sultry Substitute by 1 1/4 lengths. River Keen, the defending Bel Air champion and 13-10 favorite, was third after stumbling at the start.

“He tries very hard,” Solis said of Euchre. “I’ve ridden him four times and have won three, so of course I like him. He’s a hard horse to get by once he makes the lead.”

Perfect Sting remained unbeaten in five starts on turf at Belmont, passing stubborn pacesetter and 9-1 shot Snow Polina in the last jump to win by a neck in 2:05 1/5 in the 1 1/4-mile race over a course labeled soft.

Ridden by jockey Jerry Bailey for Stronach and trainer Joe Orseno, Perfect Sting--a 4-year-old Red Ransom filly--is has won all three of her races this year and 11 of 16 lifetime.

“The real great ones always find a way to win,” Bailey said. “I had her in a comfortable spot down the backstretch, but at the three-sixteenths pole, I didn’t think we would get there. But she kept grinding and she wanted to win this.”

Perfect Sting is scheduled to make her next start in the $500,000 Diana on Sept. 4 at Saratoga. That race is also expected to attract Tranquility Lake, a Grade I winner in California.
