Magazine Chronicles World of Bar, Restaurant Workers

Orange County restaurant, bar and nightclub employees have a new magazine devoted to their workplace.

The first issue of Last Call featured such articles as “Things People Do to Their Servers That You Won’t Believe,” “Are You Being Stalked by Your Co-Worker?” and “No Tip! What’s Up With That?”

The monthly publication, which made its debut last month, was distributed free to about 200 bars, restaurants and nightclubs along the coast from San Clemente to Long Beach. The magazine is the brainchild of Edward McLean, a longtime bartender at P.F. Chang Chinese restaurant in Newport Beach. He said he spent $5,000 of his own money to print 20,000 copies of the first issue.

In addition to industry news, the publication profiles employees at various bars and eateries, offers an advice column called Barstool Shrink, and carries classified ads for jobs in the industry.

McLean said he expects to line up enough advertising to break even on the second issue, scheduled for publication Aug. 1.

“The response has been very positive,” he said. “The people in this industry seem to be happy to finally have something just for them.
