The Orange County district attorney’s office has charged a Santa Ana man who allegedly led police on a brief car chase last week with grand theft, fleeing from officers and causing a hit-and-run accident.

Juan Segovia, 36, allegedly stole a truck that was towing a tractor mower from a Santa Ana Unified School District lot Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Later that afternoon, residents in the neighborhood of Bishop Street and Standard Avenue called police to report two men trying to sell a tractor mower, Sgt. Raul Luna said.

When patrol cars arrived, Segovia and a companion allegedly fled in the school district truck, Luna said.

The truck ran a red light at 4th Street and the Santa Ana Freeway offramp, and a car collided with the fleeing truck’s flatbed trailer, breaking it loose.

Segovia allegedly drove north on railroad tracks from the Santa Ana train station until the truck’s tires burst, Luna said.

After a brief foot chase, police arrested Segovia and passenger Armando Archundia, 33, Luna said.

Archundia also was charged with grand theft.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for both men July 24.
