IDYLLWILD, Calif. — Two climbers from the Los Angeles area fell to their deaths while scaling a popular rock face in the San Jacinto Wilderness area, a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy said.
Kwan Kam, 59, of Glendale, and Kevin Dahn, 49, of Northridge, fell 100 feet or more while climbing Lily Rock, which reaches 8,000 feet above sea level. The deaths occurred about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, said Sheriff’s Deputy Anthony Townsend.
Other climbers on the mountain saw the men fall and used a cellular phone to call authorities, officials said. A helicopter removed one body before nightfall, and Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit hikers carried the other down.
