Hall of Fame basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was arrested in Northridge Tuesday on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana, police said.

Abdul-Jabbar, 53, was stopped near the intersection of Roscoe Boulevard and White Oak Avenue about 7 p.m., said Officer Ed Funes, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Abdul-Jabbar, who was driving a Ford Expedition, was booked at the Van Nuys Jail and released on his own recognizance, Funes said.

“He was very cooperative and very respectful to the police officers who arrested him,” Funes said.

Abdul-Jabbar, a star center for UCLA, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Lakers, was as an assistant coach for the Clippers this past season. In 1998, he was arrested at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport for carrying a small amount of marijuana.
