Hogarth Gets Back Up to Par, Advances

Defending champion Tim Hogarth of Northridge rebounded from near-disaster on the first day and qualified for match play Tuesday in the 89th California Amateur golf championship at Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Club in Seaside.

Hogarth, who played the last five holes in six-over par to shoot 77 on Monday, came back with an even-par 72 to make the 32-player match-play field at 149.

Also making the field were Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys at 72-74--146, Alex Kuyumajian of Thousand Oaks at 74-76--150 and Scott Bashin of Northridge at 76-75--151.

Nonqualifiers included Tim Wren of Oxnard at 79-73--152, Scott Fulkerson of Simi Valley at 75-79--154, Keith Kinsel of Glendale at 79-75--154, Chris Etue of Chatsworth at 75-81--156, Ian Medlock of Westlake Village at 79-79--158, John Pina of Westlake Village at 79-81--160, Mike Applegate of Lancaster at 78-84--162, Bob Frishette of Burbank at 79-85--164 and Kyle Dowden of Somis at 81-89--170.

BOWLING

* Robert Smith of Simi Valley edged Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., 202-201, to win the U.S. Open on Saturday at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix.

Smith, a 1992 graduate of Royal High in his third year on the Professional Bowlers Assn. tour, won $35,000.

Smith, 26, converted a 4-6-7-10 split in the sixth frame to take a 32-pin lead.

Smith lost most of the advantage after Duke got strikes in frames six through nine, but he recovered with three consecutive strikes in the 10th frame.

TENNIS

* Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks defeated Jaysen Ching of San Jose, 6-2, 6-3, Tuesday in the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ 16 Clay Court National Championships in Rockville, Md.

Robert Yim of Glendale beat David Tafur of Longwood, Fla., 6-1, 7-5, and Matt Cloer of Linville, N.C., defeated Jesse Ferlianto of Canyon Country, 6-2, 6-2.

* Steven Forman and Bijan Moallemi, both of Del Mar, beat Sam Querrey of Thousand Oaks and Michael McClune of Irvine, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, for the doubles title of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Boys’ 12 National Hardcourt Championships on Saturday at the Harbor Bay Club in Alameda.

WATER POLO

* Joe Axelrod, All-Southern Section goalie for Harvard-Westlake High, will attend UCLA.
