Recreation Area Plans August Events

Indian lore, Hollywood sets, Shakespeare and close encounters with nature are among the activities in store for August in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Entertainment at the Peter Strauss Ranch will include a traveling troupe performing “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 6; Buzzworld, an Irish instrumental and vocal group, giving a 2 p.m. concert Aug. 13; and an evening of 1940s dance and music at 5 p.m. Aug. 19. Admission to the events is free.

At Paramount Ranch there will be a screening of the silent movie “Feel My Pulse” starring ‘20s star Bebe Daniels, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 20. A free, ranger-led tour will explore the history of movies at the ranch beginning at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 5 and 19.

Each Sunday next month, beginning at 10 a.m., the Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center will be open all day for tours and question-and-answer sessions.

A nature walk at the Circle X Ranch will explore changing seasons in the mountains, including a 3.5-mile hike, beginning at 10 a.m. Aug. 26.

Or stroll through Solstice Canyon from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 27 to hear the childhood memories of Lisa Roberts, whose grandparents built the house at Tropical Terrace.
