A woman suspected of drunk driving was killed and two passengers were injured Saturday when their vehicle skidded off an entrance ramp to the 118 Freeway and tumbled down an embankment, authorities said.

The driver, a Granada Hills woman about 36 years old, was speeding on the Woodley Avenue onramp to the westbound freeway at 3:40 p.m., said Officer Karen Faciane of the California Highway Patrol.

Her car skidded onto the right shoulder and plummeted off the 30-foot embankment, smashing into a tree at the bottom. None of the occupants was wearing a seat belt, Faciane said.

The driver suffered major trauma to her head, chest and legs and died at the scene. Her passengers, a 23-year-old Granada Hills woman and a 9-year-old girl, sustained moderate injuries, Faciane said.

The woman was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills with chest trauma, facial cuts and broken teeth. The girl, whose face and arm were cut and teeth broken, was taken to Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles.

The driver and her passengers were family members, but it is unclear how they were related, Faciane said.
