Mayor Michael L. Maertzweiler has announced he will not seek reelection to another term on the City Council in November.

After 21 years of service to the city as a council member, planning commissioner and police reserve officer, Maertzweiler said he plans on seeking a spot in the Orange County Sheriff’s Reserve Program.

“I thought it was better to do this during the campaign-filing period,” he said Friday. “I didn’t want to wait until the last minute and have people say, ‘Wait, I would have run if I knew Mike wasn’t.’ ”

Maertzweiler’s council seat, along with those now held by Councilwomen Maria Moreno and Connie Underhill, will be listed on the Nov. 7 ballot. Both Moreno and Underhill will seek reelection to their posts. Maertzweiler was first elected to the council in 1992.
