MIAMI — A suspected carjacker shot and killed a Miami police dog just three months after the animal joined the canine unit, police said Monday.
Atlas, a 2 1/2-year-old Belgian Malinois, was chasing the suspect through a Miami schoolyard late Saturday when the man shot the golden-haired dog in the stomach, police said. No one else was injured.
The 22-year-old man was charged with killing a police dog, attempted murder of a police officer, armed carjacking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and violently resisting arrest.
