Edith Vencill; ‘Time’ Voice and Store Manager

Edith Vencill, a former telephone operator, secretary and store manager, died Sunday at her home in Santa Paula. She was 80.

She was born Edith Esser on March 23, 1920, in Santa Monica. After her school years, she worked as a telephone operator in Los Angeles; it was her voice that was heard for years on the “time” recording.

On April 4, 1942, she married her best friend, Robert G. Vencill, and they had two sons, Roger Esser Vencill and Charles Albert Vencill.

When her sons were in high school, Vencill began working in the circulation department of the Santa Paula Chronicle. Later, she became secretary of the First Baptist Church of Santa Paula and manager of Fiesta Hallmark, a greeting card shop. She was also involved in the PTA, Boy Scouts and her sons’ various interests.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Santa Paula and P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter LR.

She enjoyed many trips across the country with her husband in their travel trailer.

She was preceded in death by her son Roger; a brother, George Esser, and sisters Grace Wood and Marion Welch.

In addition to her husband and son Charles of Fresno, she is survived by a brother, Robert Esser of Spring Valley; a sister, Ida Cunradi of Chula Vista, and two grandsons.

A memorial service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. A reception will be held in the parish hall following the service.
