Marine safety officials here don’t understand the recent hue and cry about Laguna Beach’s decision to prohibit many common beach activities. The county’s southernmost beach city has had similar rules in place for years.
San Clemente has laws against digging holes in the sand deeper than 2 feet, throwing Frisbees, building fires and using large umbrellas, among a host of others.
The Laguna Beach City Council recently banned many of these same activities.
Lynn Hughes, captain of San Clemente’s Marine Safety Department, said the point of the city’s ordinance is not to hand out endless citations, but to encourage voluntary compliance and provide beachgoers as safe an experience as possible.
