First-round pick Corey Simon agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles on a five-year deal Friday.

Simon, the sixth pick overall in April’s draft, will join the team in time for its preseason opener against Cleveland on Sunday.

The deal comes two days after team owner Jeffrey Lurie criticized the negotiating stance of Simon’s agents, Roosevelt Barnes and Eugene Parker.

“It’s so easy to calculate,” Lurie said about slotting draft picks into certain salaries. “This is basic, sixth-grade mathematics.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In accordance with previous No. 6 picks, Simon’s contract probably included a signing bonus of about $6 million and about $2.2 million per year.

Simon, a 6-foot-1, 293-pound defensive tackle from Florida State, is expected to make an immediate impact on the Eagle defensive line.

San Diego Charger quarterback Ryan Leaf sat out his second consecutive practice Friday because his surgically repaired right shoulder was sore.

Leaf threw a few passes during warmup drills and said he hoped to play in an exhibition game at San Francisco tonight.

It has been 19 months since Leaf played.

“Jim Harbaugh’s our starting quarterback and Moses [Moreno] is a competitor and Ryan Leaf’s the X-factor,” Coach Mike Riley said. “We don’t know where he’s going to be and we’re going to let that play out.”

The Atlanta Falcons are in no hurry for Jamal Anderson to test the knee he injured last September, and he isn’t expected to play in tonight’s exhibition game at Indianapolis.

“Personally, I’d like to keep him out the first couple of [exhibition] games. But he’s impatient,” Coach Dan Reeves said.

Denver Bronco defensive tackle Trevor Pryce headed home to Florida after failing to agree to a new contract. Asked if he expected a protracted holdout, Lamont Smith, Pryce’s Denver-based agent, said, “I think that would be a safe assumption at this point.”

Bronco owner Pat Bowlen said the team’s seven-year, $31.5-million offer that includes a $6-million signing bonus is final. Pryce wants $51 million.

Running back Errict Rhett of the Cleveland Browns returned to practice after missing two days because of swollen knees. . . . The Dallas Cowboys will honor the late Tom Landry this season by wearing an image of his famous fedora hat on their jerseys. The Cowboys play host to Pittsburgh in an exhibition game Sunday night.
