IRVINE
Soroptimist International of Irvine has launched a local offshoot of the nationwide “Call to Protect” program, and will distribute cell phones to Orange County battered women’s shelters.
The organization will spend the next two months collecting old cell phones that will be reprogrammed to dial 911 and the number of a domestic violence shelter.
Irvine’s Soroptimist chapter will work in conjunction with Verizon, a Irvine-based cellular communications provider. Verizon will repair and reprogram the phones before they are distributed to Human Options in Irvine and Laura’s House in San Clemente.
Soroptimist International has also enlisted the help of Pacific Life, a Newport Beach insurance and financial services firm, and the Irvine-based Law Firm of Gibson, Crutcher and Dunn to solicit donations from their employees.
