Democratic Convention Seeks Event Volunteers

With less than three months to go before the 2000 National Democratic Convention, sponsors of the event on Thursday launched a major volunteer drive and announced the appointment of an experienced political insider to help coordinate the party’s local effort.

Mayor Richard Riordan, a Republican who nonetheless has played an integral role in securing and helping raise money for the event, kicked off a major volunteer campaign intended to supply the convention with drivers, clerical help and special event planning, among other things.

Meanwhile, the Democratic National Convention Committee, which will put on the convention itself while the local host committee plans ancillary events and activities, announced that the promotion of Rod O’Connor from chief of staff to chief operating officer.

Tom O’Donnell, a Washington lawyer who has held a number of posts in the Clinton administration, was named managing director and will be responsible for administrative, external affairs and management functions.
