vs. New York/New Jersey

7:30

* Site--Rose Bowl, Pasadena.

* Radio--KRLA (1110), KTNQ (1020).

* Records--Galaxy 6-1-6, MetroStars 5-6-0.

* Record vs. MetroStars--1-0-0.

* Update--There was an interesting response from MetroStar Coach Octavio Zambrano in midweek when asked his thoughts on German defender Lothar Matthaeus getting injured while training with Germany’s national team for the June 10-July 2 European Championship. “I’m glad it didn’t happen with us,” Zambrano said. Matthaeus will be OK, but he won’t be seen locally because this is the New York/New Jersey team’s only regular-season visit to Pasadena. The MetroStars are a better team without Matthaeus, if only because they don’t have to cater to him. Tab Ramos’ return from injury and the addition of several former Galaxy players will make the team competitive in the weak Eastern Division. The Galaxy could go through a slump this month and next while its half-dozen international players are missing on U.S. Cup and World Cup duty. Unless, that is, Coach Sigi Schmid can mold the reserves into a cohesive unit in a hurry. He could do worse than start by throwing midfielder Brian Kelly against his old team tonight.
