For Pete’s Sake

Share

Pete Townshend? Still an “idealist” (“Indeed, He Can Explain,” by Phil Sutcliffe, May 28)? Not bloody hardly!

He may look askance at his partners Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle for being money-grubbers, but just who was it who sold the rights to use the opening chords of “Won’t Get Fooled Again” for use in that God-awful ad with the yuppies playing polo from their SUVs as they tear up the downs overlooking the White Cliffs of Dover--the spot where the “Townshend” character drove his motor scooter over the cliff in “Quadrophenia”?

At least one of the quotes in the article is dead-on accurate, though not perhaps the way it was originally meant: “ ‘Pretentious’ is just not a big enough word.” Hey, Pete, can you spell “hypocrite”?

Messrs. Townshend, Daltrey and Entwistle can go shear other sheep down at what used to be the Meadows come Aug. 16. This is one Who fan who really, really “won’t get fooled again.”

Hey, Pete, lighten up. Appreciate the fact that Roger and your fans love your songs. You may be the brains of the Who, but Roger is the soul. You need to thank Roger, John and Keith for their dedication to you throughout the years. Record, tour, enjoy and be thankful for what you have.

I’ll see you Aug. 16 in Irvine.

“Let’s See Action” did not appear on the album “Who’s Next.” Among Who fans, you’re treading on sacred ground here!
