City Council members are challenging the population figures put together by a university group that, they say, are far too low and could ultimately cost the city money.

The council voted last week to draft a letter to the Center for Demographic Research at Cal State Fullerton, stating that its population projections for the city were incorrect and should not be submitted to the county.

The center looks at population, employment and housing statistics to project the growth of communities in Orange County. These projections are then used by groups such as the Orange County Transportation Authority and water districts to plan for the needs of the cities.

The report from the center estimates there are 40,995 people living in 13,823 homes, apartments and townhouses this year in Rancho.
