Small Shop’s a Fit for Tiny Girls to ‘Tweens’

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Designer and owner Teddie Tillett has been manufacturing apparel for children and young girls for eight years and selling at the retail level for four. In her small shop on the Westside, her own designs are on the racks along with work from other designers.

Most of the inventory is for little girls, but there are some choice pieces for “tweens,” between preteen and full-on teenagers.

Some wonderful tie-dyed velvet shifts that call for a flawless figure would probably run upward of $100 at many stores, but because you’re dealing with the designer and manufacturer who’s selling directly to the public here the price is $48.

Those of you who love Fred Segal but shudder at the price tags will appreciate the drawstring and trimmed jeans for $60 instead of $120 and the embroidered little handbags (a la Fendi) for $28 instead of $80 and up.

The children’s apparel is charming and priced lower than comparable styles in many stores.

One printed velvet dress that is washable and “wears like iron,” according to Tillett, retails for $82 and was tagged at $30. A camisole top that would usually sell for about $40 was $12.

During my recent visit, Tillett was marking down items for her summer sale. Whatever is left will undoubtedly make it to a final markdown area in her parking lot, where she places leftovers for $5 and $10. I picked up a velvet top that retailed for around $50 for $5. Now that’s a bargain.

Teddie Tillett, 3238 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. Hours: Monday-Saturday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. (310) 581-6681.
