Democrats Have Net Advantage on Web
Democrats and Republicans on Thursday launched dueling Web sites aimed at attracting more people to the U.S. political process, but the Democratic site went even further by offering free Internet access and e-mail.
The Democratic National Committee developed the site, https://www.FreeDem.com, with the help of MillionEyes.com, offering an Internet service provider application that installs quickly.
The site also includes a full digest of top news stories, shopping and a facility allowing citizens to register to vote online, as well as myriad links to bastions of the Democratic Party.
DNC Chairman Joe Andrew said the party decided to launch the Web site to help close the digital divide.
Meanwhile, Republican leaders in the House unveiled their own Web site, https://www.gop.gov, saying it was designed to give the public immediate access to press releases, schedules and other information.
Rep. J.C. Watts Jr. of Oklahoma, chairman of the House Republican Conference, said: “This allows us to communicate directly with the people we represent, people outside the Beltway who go to work every day, pay their taxes, and want to know what their representative is doing to lower their taxes, improve education, strengthen national security and save Social Security.”
