All Saints Begins a Busy Week

* All Saints Episcopal Church of Oxnard holds a week of activities beginning with a Philippine Independence Day celebration at Oxnard Plaza Park at 10 a.m. and a “Bread of Life” dinner in the parish hall at 5:30 p.m.

On Sunday, there will be worship services at 8 a.m. A bilingual Pentecost service is scheduled for 10 a.m.

There will be a Holy Eucharist and healing service in the Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

A Bible study class will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Trinity Lutheran Holds Bike Rodeo

* Trinity Lutheran Church in Simi Valley will hold a bike rodeo, sponsored by Aid Assn. for Lutherans Branch 3919 and Cub Scout Pack 3621 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.

The event is open to the community. There will be a bike inspection, helmet checks, a riding course and a lesson on patching a tire. City bike registrations will be available for $1 each.

Students to Be Confirmed at Mass

* St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Oxnard will have a Mass at 5:15 p.m. today. Confession will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Bishop Thomas Curry, regional bishop of the Santa Barbara Pastoral Region, will confirm 78 high school students as full church members during the Mass today.

There will be Mass at 7:30, 9 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Spanish Mass will be at noon and 1:30 p.m.

‘Holy Fires’ Is Topic of Sermon

* St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Newbury Park will hold worship services at 8:30 and 10 a.m. Sunday.

Pastor Lynne Austin will deliver the message “Holy Fires,” focusing on Acts 2:1-21. Pentecost Sunday, the birth of the church, will be celebrated. The church is at 1360 S. Wendy Drive.

Service at Vineyard Christian

* Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Thousand Oaks holds its worship service at 10:05 a.m. Sunday.

Interfaith Fellowship Meets at Inn

* Interfaith Fellowship, formerly Interfaith Church for Today, meets in the Thousand Oaks Inn ballroom at 10 a.m. Sunday. The Rev. Gifford Smith’s message will be “How to Know God Better.”

There will be an informal, interactive meditation circle at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Red Clothing Urged for Service

* St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Oxnard will hear from the Rev. Alan P. Gorsline on “Learning to Speak” during the 10:15 a.m. service Sunday. Communion will be offered. There will be no Sunday School classes, so children can participate in communion.

Those who attend are asked to wear red in celebration of Pentecost, which commemorates the birth of the early church when the Holy Spirit empowered the apostles in Jerusalem.

Following the services there will be St. Paul’s annual “Grad Roast” and potluck dinner to honor spring 2000 graduates.

Child care is available for children up to age 4.

Combined Services Scheduled

* First Church of Ventura will celebrate Pentecost Sunday by combining contemporary and traditional services in one service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

During the service, six youths will be confirmed as church members.

After the service, there will be a reception in Trotter Hall for those confirmed and to say farewell to Associate Pastor Amy Aitken, who is leaving to serve the Knollwood United Methodist Church in Granada Hills as pastor in charge.

A March for Tibet Independence

* A march led by Ani Pachen Dolma, a Buddhist nun who led 700 men and women on horseback against Chinese tanks, will pass through Ventura beginning Monday.

The march is to bring attention to the need for Tibet’s independence. People began walking from San Francisco on April 25 and are expected to travel through Ventura as they make their way to Los Angeles, where they will meet with another group coming from San Diego led by Palden Gyatso, a monk who endured 33 years of torture and imprisonment in Chinese jails in Tibet for his beliefs. The march from San Diego began May 29.

The two groups are scheduled to converge on June 24 in front of the Chinese consulate in Los Angeles to participate in a mass rally.

Mormons Host Public Conference

* The Newbury Park stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invites the public to attend it’s semiannual stake conference at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Newbury Park Stake Center, 35 S. Wendy Drive. Kevin Hamilton, stake president, will speak along with other area leaders.

Seminary graduation for high school students will be commemorated during a service at 5 p.m. Sunday at a church building in Westlake at 32165 Watergate Road. Students from Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks, Oak Park, Agoura Hills and Westlake high schools will be recognized for their participation in a religion class held at church weekdays before school.

Graduating seminary students will receive diplomas for completing a four-year course of early morning scripture study.

Group Helps Women in Transitions

* A nonsectarian support group for women coping with life transitions such as marriage, divorce, a new relationship, loss of a partner, health issues, aging parents, moving into the workplace or retirement meets from 9 to 11 a.m. every Wednesday at Jewish Family Services in Ventura.

There is a fee of $10 or less, depending on need.

Centers to Hold Shavout Services

* Shavout services will be held at Chabad centers in Agoura Hills, Westlake Village and Oak Park at 10 a.m. today.

Continental Singers to Perform

* The Continental Singers “Testify to Truth” tour will continue at the South Coast Fellowship Faith Center of Ventura at 7 p.m. Friday. The group of 25 vocalists and a 25-piece brass band will perform high-energy music with choreography and personal testimony.

Race Unity Celebration Planned

* The Ventura County Race Unity Celebration, a festive gathering to build bridges of friendship and understanding, will be held from 12:30 to 4 p.m. next Saturday at Constitution Park in Camarillo.

The free event is open to the public and will feature Grammy Award winner K.C. Porter, a 50-member gospel choir, singer Walter Heath, Mexican quintet La Barca and a Polynesian dance troupe, Ports of Paradise.

Those attending should bring folding chairs, sunscreen and a picnic lunch. The event is sponsored by 14 communities of the Bahai faith in Ventura County and western Los Angeles County.

The park is at 600 Carmen Drive.

Monte Vista to Feature Singers

* Monte Vista Presbyterian Church of Newbury Park will feature singing by Toby and Barb Waldowski during worship services at 8:30 and 10 a.m. June 18.

Exploring Vocations in the Church

* Young people who belong to Region II of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America can explore a variety of church vocations at the ninth annual Invitation to Service at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks Aug. 3-5.

Young people from high school to college age will learn about the roles of pastors, missionaries, associates in ministry, diaconal ministers, music ministers and youth ministers during the event, which will feature special music, small group interaction, recreation, devotionals and Bible study.
