Executive Privilege

The Gulf War adventure “Three Kings” with George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube was one of President Clinton’s favorite movies of 1999. Director Wolfgang Petersen--whose upcoming film “The Perfect Storm” reunites Clooney and Wahlberg--has offered the president a private screening of the reality-based adventure, but there’s no word yet on whether Petersen et al will be heading to the White House.

Back for More

Heather Matarazzo, who made an auspicious screen debut as the endearingly awkward preteen Dawn Wiener in the 1995 indie comedy “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” will reunite with “Dollhouse” writer-director Todd Solondz on his upcoming movie, still untitled, which is scheduled to start shooting in July. The film is being produced under the Good Machine banner, which produced Solondz’s last movie, “Happiness.” New Line Cinema will distribute the movie.

Monkey Business

The Toronto Star has reported that the marijuana documentary “Grass” has been banned in Ontario, Canada, due to a scene that shows chimpanzees smoking pot. Officials of the province have taken issue with the scene because it violates a local ordinance that prohibits films that show animals being abused or mistreated. Representatives from distributor Lions Gate responded that the footage of the chimps lighting up is actually archival footage from a National Institute of Mental Health project from 1970. “Grass” opens Friday at the Nuart in West Los Angeles.

The Insider, Part 2

Entertainment journalist Rachel Abramowitz’s “Is That a Gun in Your Pocket? Women’s Experience of Power in Hollywood” is the second Hollywood insider book to raise well-groomed eyebrows this year (remember “The Operator”?). Abramowitz’s book is already a West Coast beach blanket favorite because of its gossipy anecdotes and juicy tone. (See review by Amy Wallace in today’s Book Review.)
