Failed Coup Leader Held, Official Says

Former Paraguayan army chief and failed coup leader Lino Oviedo was arrested by police in the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguazu near Paraguay, said Nelson Argana, Paraguay’s defense minister. Oviedo was sentenced to 10 years in prison for an attempted coup in 1996 and is sought by Paraguayan courts on charges he plotted the killing of Vice President Luis Maria Argana--the defense minister’s father--in March 1999. Oviedo fled Paraguay last year.
