GOP Lawmakers Told to Raise $16 Million
Associated Press
WASHINGTON —
House Republican leaders will demand GOP lawmakers raise $16 million for use in key contested races this fall, officials said Tuesday night. They intend to hold the rank and file accountable through control of chairmanships and committee assignments in 2001.
Any Republican who declines to help fill the quota will be asked to “call [House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.)], set up a personal meeting to tell him why,” according to material prepared for a GOP meeting today.
