Los Robles ER Addition Opens as Renovation Begins

An 8,400-square-foot addition to the emergency room at Los Robles Regional Medical Center opened Tuesday, the same day workers began renovating the hospital’s original emergency room.

When finished, the $6.5-million upgrade--which includes the addition--will end the sometimes three-hour waits at the emergency room, hospital officials said. The expansion is expected to be completed early next year.

On Wednesday, the new facility was relatively quiet, compared with the average patient load of 90 people a day, officials said.

“Things are a little slow,” said hospital spokeswoman Kris Carraway-Bowman.

Praise from patients and hospital staff focused on the 11 new patient beds, three trauma rooms and a new fast-track area for treating injuries and illnesses that aren’t life-threatening.

Not everyone was excited, though. Denise Fransen brought her 1-year-old daughter, Victoria, in at noon Wednesday. Fransen feared the baby had swallowed nail polish.

“It’s beautiful,” Fransen said of the new pediatrics emergency room, with animal-themed wallpaper trim. “I was just not hoping to see it so soon.”
