Some Still Sticking With Bush-McCain

John McCain’s Michigan backers apparently haven’t heard him say he has no interest in joining Republican George W. Bush’s presidential ticket.

In fact, they put in orders for 500 Bush-McCain bumper stickers after McCain’s Michigan campaign office announced by e-mail Wednesday that they were available.

State Sen. John Schwarz, chairman of McCain’s Michigan campaign, said he paid for them himself because he is convinced that having McCain on the ticket will help the GOP win in November.

“We had the bumper stickers printed several weeks ago,” Schwarz said. “If they start showing up, it will be kind of fun.”

McCain beat Bush in Michigan’s Republican presidential primary Feb. 22, but he suspended his campaign two weeks later after doing poorly in other primaries.

He asked not to be considered for vice president when he endorsed Bush five weeks ago. McCain’s national campaign did not return a phone call Wednesday for comment. Schwarz said Bush’s campaign called after learning the bumper stickers were available.

“They looked at it, thought about it for a while and thought it was a positive thing,” Schwarz said. “If we go through these fast enough . . . we’ll print some more.”

He acknowledged, however, that some people may want the bumper stickers more as a novelty item than as a sign of true support for McCain.
