Freight Train Derails, Spills Fuel
A freight train derailed Thursday in a rail yard, spilling diesel fuel near the San Bernardino Freeway and shutting down two offramps for hours, San Bernardino County fire officials said.
A locomotive and tanker car were among 17 cars that went off the tracks at 3:18 p.m. a few miles west of San Bernardino. The cause of the derailment was not immediately determined, county fire spokesman Dave Dowling said. No one was hurt. Cleanup was expected to continue through the night.
The tanker car held sulfuric acid, but it did not spill.
A locomotive usually carries 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel, county Fire Marshal Peter Brierty said. Colton Fire Department spokeswoman Kathie Saidon said less than 50 gallons spilled.
The Rancho and Pepper exits of the freeway were shut as a precaution, but traffic continued to flow on the freeway.
A small fire started but was quickly extinguished.
