Taking ‘Flight’
Regarding your article on Long Beach Opera’s production of Luigi Dallapiccola’s opera “Night Flight” (“The Italians Have a Word for It,” by John Henken, June 11):
The same story by Antoine de Saint-Exupery was made into a film by MGM in 1932. Directed by Clarence Brown, “Night Flight” starred Clark Gable and Helen Hayes and included a highly innovative score by my father, Herbert Stothart. Although the film is not out in video, I’m sure Turner Classic Movies has it in its archives.

In the article it is stated that Julian Webber directed Berg’s “Wozzeck” for that company. Long Beach Opera has never, alas, put it on; the “Wozzeck” they performed was by Manfred Gurlitt and was a fascinating contrast to the more famous Berg opera. Both are based on the play “Woyzeck” by Georg Buechner.
Also, in the interview with Ralph Fiennes, it is stated that “Sonnenschein” is Hungarian for “sunshine,” but “Sonnenschein” is a German word.
