* So I understand Al Gore, in addition to inventing the Internet and discovering Love Canal, recently invented prosperity (June 14). I think Gore’s attempt to take credit for the people’s hard work and innovation is arrogant. Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge’s remark was closer to the truth: Our prosperity has more to do with the people in Pennsylvania than with the people on Pennsylvania Avenue.

I have noted voters who claim to be Democrats but now feel they cannot vote for Gore. They want to embrace the big-money, NRA philosophy, hail-fellow-well-met candidate who is speed-cramming on knowledge he never knew before. Also, George W. Bush’s desire to privatize any part of the Social Security funds is a dangerous delusion that would nullify the purpose of the original act.

These voters will be shooting themselves in the foot by electing the same willingly ineffective Republicans to the House and Senate and aiding and abetting a Supreme Court that is racing backward double-time to an anachronistic past and represents a threat to destroy federal civil rights and laws.

Re “Year’s Worth of Gore’s E-Mail Lost Due to Backup Breakdown,” June 9: Something is rotten in the White House. I am sure that the White House has a sophisticated e-mail system run by competent systems administrators with proper backup procedures. Not understanding e-mail backups caused problems for Oliver North and we all remember Nixon’s 18 minutes of tape. One year of missing e-mail for the man running for president? How convenient.
