Stan Berman, Owner, Stan’s Donuts

Stan Berman and his wife, Ina, started buying Lalique and Baccarat crystal 25 years ago, mostly on trips to Paris. “We have just a few pieces that are really super,” says Berman, owner of the UCLA hangout Stan’s Corner Donut Shoppe in Westwood Village. His prized possession is a Lalique “Trophy,” a glass ice skater inspired by Katarina Witt. “It’s an abstract,” he notes. The “Trophy” sits on a living room table, surrounded by small crystal animals, including an elephant and a frog. “We only have clears, not colors,” Berman explains. “We’re purists. The colors are a new style.” Any piece he covets? “Lalique makes an entry table; it’s huge. We originally could have bought it for $15,000 or $18,000. Now it’s $150,000. Whenever I see it in the Lalique store on Rodeo, my heart does a little pitter-patter.”
