Members of the surgical-trauma intensive care unit at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center have won a Circle of Excellence Award from the American Assn. of Critical Care Nurses.

The 2000 Multidisciplinary Team Award was given for the unit’s efforts to work together, while accepting the newest ideas in treatment, said Mary Kay Bader, a neuroclinical nurse specialist in the unit.

“These cases are considered the worst of the worst in head injuries,” Bader said.

The latest research shows that not all neurological damage occurs at the moment of impact, but evolves over hours and days, Bader said.

Therefore, she said, proper care and monitoring is critical to not only treat damage, but to prevent additional damage.

Bader’s unit consists of neurosurgeons, trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, pharmacists and respiratory therapists.
