* The prolific Oscar-winner (for co-writing “Rain Man”) has more than 20 film credits, including “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “Entrapment.” His most recent was “Passion of Mind,” which he also produced.

Crack of Dawn: Saturday I get up between 4 and 5 a.m. I ride an exercise bicycle, lift weights and read stuff that prepares me to write that day. Then I read the Los Angeles Times and New York Times. I enjoy that part of my day. During the week I just scan, but on weekends I can sit down and read whatever I want.

To Market, to Market: We go to the farmers market in Santa Monica on Pico Boulevard and buy great produce. There’s a guy who makes great hummus dishes and all these great snacks. We take our German shepherd, Gerry, with us and he guards the car. Then we get all that stuff home and have a long walk with Gerry in Brentwood. And then I write.

General Admission: The big daytime activity is going to movies. It would not be unusual to go to three movies over the weekend. We would rather see movies with a general audience than go to private screenings. I like to see movies the way they’re meant to be seen: in the dark surrounded by strangers. Then you really know how good it is.

Favorite Foods: Restaurants we loveinclude Vincenti in Brentwood. It is at once an elegant restaurant and has a comfortable homey feeling. They make the best silver sole I’ve eaten anywhere, and the best branzino--an Italian striped sea bass--and incredible green lasagna. We also like 5 Dudley, a place in Venice run by a fabulous guy named Burt. They have the best French onion soup.

Bravo!: We love to go down to the Orange County Performing Arts Center to see Opera Pacific for the Sunday matinee. It’s great to go when you’re awake. We used to subscribe to the L.A. Opera, but every year our seats got worse. So we started to go to Opera Pacific and it’s wonderful.
