Less than 48 hours after becoming the first Athletics’ player to hit for the cycle at the Oakland Coliseum, Eric Chavez agreed to a $11.75-million, four-year contract extension through 2004.
Chavez, hitting .288 with 12 homers and 39 RBIs, became the ninth Oakland player to sign a contract running through at least the 2001 season.

Ryan Glynn, who pitched eight shutout innings in a spot start for the Texas Rangers earlier this season against the Dodgers, was recalled from triple-A Oklahoma. He replaces left-hander Darren Oliver, who is on the disabled list because of weakness in his left shoulder. . . . Pitcher Scott Kamieniecki was designated for assignment by the Indians, who now have 10 days to trade, waive or release him. . . . Tampa Bay left-hander Tony Saunders, who broke his arm delivering a pitch 13 months ago, reported no problems after his second simulated game at St. Petersburg, Fla.
