Hayden Seeks Audit of Top School Salaries

State Sen. Tom Hayden (D-Los Angeles) on Monday called for a state audit of the rising executive and administrative salaries in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Hayden said an audit should be done to determine whether the higher salaries are necessary due to market competition and how performance criteria could be applied.

“It is troubling that the district has failed to control administrative salaries, which are rising far more rapidly than achievement rates,” Hayden said in a letter to Assemblyman Scott Wildman (D-Burbank), chairman of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee.

Wildman was not available for comment Monday.

Hayden cited a Sunday article in The Times showing that a year of reform and reorganization had boosted the district’s top salaries by as much as 40% and increased the number of positions that can earn in six figures.
