Cal State Gets Grants to Train Teachers in Computer Uses

Cal State Long Beach and Dominguez Hills are among eight campuses in the statewide system that will be training teachers to use technology in the classroom under a federal grant announced Tuesday.

UC Irvine was also among the 100-plus grantees nationwide that will benefit from the three-year, $128-million program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education “Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers to Use Technology.” By encouraging partnerships among colleges, elementary and secondary schools, community groups and technology companies, the grant program aims to make 200,000 new teachers technology-proficient by 2003.

“There’s a lot of anecdotal information that shows some of the students for the first time are more technologically savvy than their teachers in the K-12 system,” said Cal State spokesman Ken Swisher. “This is an effort to give those teachers the skills they need.”

Cal State Dominguez Hills will receive $604,000 to train teachers in all grade levels about the Internet.
