Olson Cancels Appearance on Radio Cooking Show

Former fugitive Sara Jane Olson abruptly canceled a radio appearance Tuesday, worried that her plan to give tips on making artichoke dip might violate a court-imposed gag order.

Olson, fighting 25-year-old charges that she was involved in planting pipe bombs under police cars as a member of the Symbionese Liberation Army, is raising money for her defense by selling the cookbook, “Serving Time: America’s Most Wanted Recipes.”

She agreed to appear on the show “Air Talk” on public radio station KPCC-FM (89.3) for a discussion of her cookbook with host Kitty Felde.

“She was going to make artichoke dip,” Felde said. “I was going to bring a blender and she was going to bring the ingredients. It would have provided some good sound.”

But once word got out, reporters began calling and Olson’s defense team decided it was too risky.

Olson is due in court today seeking sanctions against prosecutors and prospective star witness Patty Hearst Shaw for violating the judge’s gag order in interviews--one of them on Felde’s show.

“They decided the timing was not good,” Felde said.
