The City Council has given the Police Department the go-ahead to buy a Chevrolet Suburban for $56,000, equipped with city maps, tents, a fax machine, TV and other materials needed to serve as a mobile command unit in emergencies.
The vehicle will be partly paid for with money saved by not replacing four Chevrolet Caprice patrol cars that were eligible to be traded in for newer models.
The department refurbished the cars for a few more years of use, saving an estimated $32,000.
Chief William Lentini estimates the department will have the Suburban sometime next year.
