The Orange County Transportation Authority agreed Friday to pay $8 million to the city to settle a lawsuit over the authority’s plan to build a 30-acre bus depot on MacArthur Boulevard by the Santa Ana River.

The city sued last year to block the authority’s purchase of the land, which the city had hoped to use for a commercial development that would attract about 1,200 jobs and substantial tax revenue.

The authority bought the former Associated Concrete lot in October 1999. The property lies in an area designated for urban renewal projects by the federal government.

The settlement will allow the authority to build a depot on about two-thirds of the land. In exchange, the city will receive the money, about 8.5 acres of land and improvements to streets, sewers and utilities in the area.

The authority also agreed to train residents in the neighborhood for jobs at the depot.
