At its Wednesday night meeting, the City Council approved vacant city-owned property off Monroe Avenue and across from the Civic Center as the site for a proposed Vietnam War Memorial statue. The 3 to 2 vote to approve the site came as a surprise to Councilwoman Joy L. Neugebauer, who before the vote moved to have a public hearing on the matter. The motion was declined, even though Neugebauer said she had 200 signatures of residents opposed to putting the memorial on city-owned property. Memorial committee member Craig Mandeville said he hopes construction can begin in 60 days.
