The Planning Commission approved a proposal Monday to open a licensed care center for the terminally ill on Walnut Street, the first in the city, center officials said.
At a public hearing, commissioners unanimously passed a proposal for the Walnut Care Center, a hospice aimed at improving the quality of life for terminally ill patients, people with projected life spans of about six months or less due to severe health conditions.
“The center will have physicians and nurses for the patients,” said Scott Grabowski, the city’s assistant planner. “Social services, spiritual and dietary counseling will also be provided by request or as needed.”
Planning officials said the Walnut Center is designed to house no more than 25 patients in a pair of two-story buildings that blend into the neighborhood along Walnut Street.
