Elderly Man Killed in House Fire

An unidentified elderly man died early Wednesday morning in an accidental fire at his home, officials said.

A 911 call from a neighbor at 6:12 a.m. brought 30 firefighters to the one-story, wood-frame dwelling in the 500 block of West 49th Place, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

It took 12 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which apparently started when items near a floor furnace ignited, Humphrey said.

Firefighters found the body. The man apparently lived alone.

Humphrey said the man is the second senior citizen in Los Angeles to die a week to die because of a fire started by items placed too close to a floor furnace.

Damages from the fire were estimated at $160,000.
