Will on China

Share

George Will’s Feb. 28 commentary advocates that we should insist that all the presidential candidates declare that they will support the Taiwan Security Enhancement Act passed by the House and that they will favor a crash program for development and deployment of a ship-based theater missile defense system to defend Taiwan.

This man is nuts. We should do quite the opposite. These warmongering acts are a gross provocation and interference in the internal affairs of China, and they should be denounced forcefully. Taiwan is an integral part of China, and China will never permit it to become an independent state, our threats, provocations and moralizing notwithstanding. China has 1.2 billion people, is a nuclear power and, if it must, will go to war to defend the integrity of its territory.

Will’s analogy with “Lord Nelson’s Rule” ignores the fact that Nelson was prepared to go to war with Napoleon Bonaparte and, in fact, did. Is Will prepared for this country to go to war with China? If so, will he volunteer to fight?
