Human Remains Found Near Hwy. 33

Human remains were discovered Sunday afternoon off California 33 about 15 miles north of Rose Valley Road near Lockwood Valley, authorities confirmed.

Oxnard resident Kay Saillant, a Los Angeles Times staff writer, was playing in the snow with her daughter, Taylor Young, 6, and her daughter’s friend, Tulaya Nash, 8, about 2:30 p.m. when she found two bones.

“We were making a snowman just off the side of the road and we needed arms. I looked down and I had to wait for my thoughts to catch up with my eyes because it looked like human bones,” Saillant said.

Saillant said she found one leg bone right in front of her and another partially buried under a nearby bush. She said she also saw a plastic tablecloth in the soil.

“It looked to be like somebody may have wrapped somebody up in this tablecloth and buried them,” she said.

Ventura County sheriff’s deputies confirmed Sunday night that the remains were human. A sergeant, two deputies and an investigator from the county medical examiner’s office remained on the scene as of 8:30 p.m.

The area where the bones were found is about 24 feet off the highway next to Chorrow Grande Creek. It is a heavily wooded location in Los Padres National Forest.

Authorities would not say whether the site would be excavated or if more bones were located. The remains had not been identified as of Sunday night.

Authorities said the remains had been in the area for several weeks.
