USC Loses to Stanford

Milena Flores’ two free throws with 10 seconds left were decisive for No. 25-ranked Stanford in a 66-64 victory over USC Sunday at the Sports Arena. Stanford, 19-7 and 12-4 in the Pacific 10, came back from a nine-point deficit to tie the score with 5:20 left. Flores, who scored 18 points, and Bethany Donaphin, who had 13, combined to make all 10 of their free throws down the stretch. Tiffany Elmore led USC (13-13, 8-8) with 11 points. . . . Pepperdine collapsed the last nine minutes of the West Coast Conference final and lost to San Diego, 68-51, at Santa Clara. San Diego (17-12) went on a 19-2 run after trailing, 45-41. The loss ended a winning streak at 11 games for regular-season WCC champion Pepperdine (21-9). It was the second year in a row the Waves lost in the tournament final.

No. 1 Connecticut (28-1) was a 85-41 winner over St. John’s (11-18) in a Big East tournament quarterfinal game at Storrs, Conn. In other quarterfinal games, No. 19 Boston College (25-7) was a 74-52 winner over Georgetown (17-12); No. 8 Rutgers (21-6) held Villanova (15-14) to the lowest Big East tournament point total in a 62-32 victory; and Ruth Riley had 18 points and 14 rebounds for No. 6 Notre Dame (25-3) in a 67-52 victory over Miami (14-15). . . . Kyra Elzy made two free throws with 55.2 seconds left to put No. 2 Tennessee (28-3) ahead to stay in a 70-67 victory over No. 17 Mississippi State (23-7) at Chattanooga, Tenn., that gave the Lady Vols their fourth Southeastern Conference tournament title in five years.

Katie Douglas scored 24 points to lead No. 18 and defending national champion Purdue (22-7) to a 71-63 victory over Penn State (26-4) at Indianapolis and its third consecutive Big Ten tournament title. . . . No. 12 Duke (25-5) reached the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament final with a 77-56 victory over Georgia Tech (15-13) at Greensboro, N.C. Duke plays North Carolina (18-11)--a 67-63 winner over No. 16 Virginia (23-8)--in the championship game. . . . Hamchetou Maiga had 21 points and 11 rebounds for No. 14 Old Dominion (23-4, 16-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association) in a 70-47 victory over Virginia Commonwealth (15-14, 9-7) at Norfolk, Va. . . . No. 23 Tulane (25-4) reached the final of the Conference USA tournament at Louisville, Ky., with a 79-75 victory over North Carolina Charlotte (10-20).
