Cal State Fullerton freshman basketball player Rodney Anderson was transferred Monday night from Martin Luther King Jr.-Drew Medical Center to Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, where his condition was upgraded to fair from critical.

“I’m told his vital signs have stabilized,” Kaiser Spokesman Kevin Dunegan said.

Anderson was shot last Thursday by a unknown gunman near his family’s home in Los Angeles.

Coach Bob Hawking and assistants Todd Johnson and Rich Bossenmeyer visited Anderson Monday before he was transferred. “He’s alert,” Johnson said. “We felt like he knew we were there, and he would nod sometimes.”

* Denise Curry “will not seek renewal of her contract” as Cal State Fullerton women’s basketball coach and will seek other opportunities, the athletic department announced Monday.

Curry, 40, completed her third season as coach Saturday with a 16-64 overall record. This year’s team was 2-25 and won only one Big West Conference game.

“We will launch a nationwide search for a replacement as soon as possible,” Athletic Director John Easterbrook said in a statement. “We wish Denise well.”
